Purchasing a vehicle is a big decision, whether it is new or used, but purchasing a used car is particulary risky. With that risk comes the possibility of a great deal. Used cars can provide the buyer with an excellent value over new cars, since the price is lower and the value of a new car tends to diminish after driving it off the lot. You can get a great deal on a used car, but do be careful. Look for these signs when you are considering a used car.

The Paint:
The paint on a car may cause the buyer to turn instantly away from the car, or to go immediately to that car. The paint on a car can tell you a lot of things about the cars history as well. New paint jobs are often used to cover up or hide larger problems than chipping. Open the doors on the car and look for small seam lines. If these seam lines are present, you know that the car has been painted. If they are not evident on ALL door panels, then you will know that only one part of the car was painted, which can mean that the car has had body damage that required new paint on that particular part.

Front, Back and In Between:
Look at the bumpers, and wheels for rust or dents. These also may give you an indication of whether or not the car has been involved in an accident. Look at all areas of the car including the underneath to check for signs of major body damage. Be sure that the hood and door panels are aligned with the fender and side panels.

Pop The Hood:
Look at the engine to see how clean it appears. Check for leaks and rust. Pull out the dipstick and rub the oil between your fingers. Gritty oil can mean the the engine has been damaged or is worn. Start it up and be sure that it does so immediately.

Go For A Drive:
When you take the car for a test drive, be sure to check the brakes by pushing on them and listening for any squeaking or squealing. Check all the functions of the car, such as the windshield wipers and the headlights. I once bought a car and both headlights were out, but had no idea until driving it home when I couldn't see! The dealership would do nothing to fix the problem! So be sure and check these things. You can check the transmission for slippage by engaging the emergency brake and shifting through the gears. You should not hear any noises or grinding.

Get a Second Opinion:
Take the car to a mechanic. The mechanic will probably charge you a small fee, but the benefit of knowing that your car is in tip-tip shape will make it worth the money. You should also ask to see a maintenance report on the car. This will tell you when and where the oil was changed and what if any problems that the previous owners had with the car.
